I grew up in a small town
in the foothills of North Carolina called Rutherfordton. I then went to Davidson
College and then to Duke University
for medical school. I was then fortunate enough
to be recruited to the Medical University of South Carolina
for my general surgery training. And I obtained further
specialty training in pediatric general and
thoracic surgery at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. While I was there, I did a
further subspecialty fellowship in pediatric surgical oncology
at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. My family and I were thrilled
to be back in Charleston. And I am thrilled to be working
at MUSC Children’s Hospital, providing surgical care to the
children of South Carolina. I think the most
important part of my job is to treat patients and
families in a team approach from surgical scheduling and
the pre-operative evaluation to the inpatient
hospitalization. I want to make sure everything
is seamless and straightforward in the hospital. I work with many
different groups, like physical therapists,
pharmacists, nurses, and our nurse
practitioners to make sure that the child is treated
in the best way possible. Most importantly, I treat every
child as if they are my own. It’s already hard enough to have
a sick child in the hospital. We want to do everything
we can to make sure that that child has
the best outcome. My expertise is in pediatric
general and thoracic surgery. We treat children from
birth to 18 years of age. We treat problems of the head,
and neck, chest, abdomen, genitourinary
system, and the skin. A lot of congenital
problems, like gastroschisis and tracheoesophageal fistula
come to big children’s hospitals like MUSC. We also treat more common
pediatric problems, like appendicitis, inguinal
hernia, and pyloric stenosis laparoscopically. This means that we can do
these surgeries with smaller incisions, minimizing the pain
after surgery for the child. MUSC is South Carolina’s
Children’s Hospital. We provide expert surgical care
for all children of this region in all subspecialties. We have some of the best
and brightest physicians and researchers in
the state and region. We are way ahead of
the curve in being able to offer the newest
technology and highest level of care in this region.
