Firefighter credits Medical City Denton for saving his life

(dramatic music) (As a firefighter and EMT, John Copeland
knew all the signs of a heart attack,) (but when he began to experience them
he didn’t think it was happening to him.) – He is an incredibly healthy ex-Marine, a firefighter who actually
trains firefighters. So, a very healthy man, who was actually exercising
at the time of his event and had a catastrophic event. Fire department responded immediately, they assessed him very rapidly, and recognized he was in trouble. – I’ve been a paramedic
for twenty-something years, and I’ve seen all the signs
and symptoms of every type of cardiac event there is, and I denied it when I was having it, and I just, I was in
complete denial the entire — My shoulder pain, my arm went numb, when I could no longer breathe, I thought of every other reason that it could be except a cardiac event. – They recognized he was
having a heart attack and en route to our hospital, notified us of his situation, was able to transmit
information in advance that allowed us to
prepare for his arrival. Literally, within a few
seconds of his arrival, into the cath lab, he had a cardiac arrest. – In the cath lab, we were ready for him. We accessed the artery and while we were doing the procedure, you know, he had a cardiac arrest up to eleven times. He required multiple shocks, and required emergent intubation where we put a tube down to his lungs. We were then, thankfully, able to open up his artery and as soon as we did that, his blood flow was restored and his heart rhythms calmed down and he became more
hemo-dynamically stable. – We’re the only hospital in Denton county that has all board-certified interventional cardiologists
on staff 24/7/365. The cath lab team is second to none and can respond very, very quickly. (applause) – Just the word “thank you” isn’t enough. I don’t have the expression of gratitude that I need. – There is multiple people that were involved in his care which all sort of converged to help him in a timely fashion. And if it wasn’t for all those people, I don’t think we would have had a successful outcome. – Thank God, I chose the right hospital. (applause) I was told by physicians
that don’t work here that this was the hospital to come to, that I picked the right hospital. I’m here because of this hospital. (Medical City Denton
