Scripps Vascular Surgeon Jeffrey Weiss, MD

I became a physician in vascular surgery
because I’m interested in acute diseases that require critical care thinking
along with technical expertise. My medical interests are
diseases of the vascular system, which include diseases of the
arteries and of the veins, both of the lower extremities, the abdomen,
the chest and the neck. So, I specialize in endovascular
and open vascular surgical solutions for diseases of the extremity, and also aneurysmal disease
of the abdomen and the thorax. I can fix a patient’s disease process
by a multitude of different ways. And for an example, if they have
an arterial problem that needs to be addressed,
it can be addressed using a balloon or a stint but it also could sometimes
be handled with open surgery. And if you have the ability
to do both procedures, I think in an unbiased way
you can help the patient select the best option for them. I just want patients to know
when they choose me that they’re going to get
a strong advocate on their team. I’m a great communicator, and I work well with other physicians. And so I will champion
their disease process and make sure that we come to a
solution that they can be happy with and that the other physicians
will help take care of. One of the most rewarding
aspects of my job is when I’m able to get a patient
back to their previous level of function. And it may be that the patient
came to me with just some difficulty walking
to the mailbox, or it may be that they came to me
with a life- or limb-threatening condition. And getting them back to the
previous state of health is a priority. One of the main reasons
I like being a part of Scripps Clinic is the communication. It’s very easy for me
to communicate with specialists and with the primary care physician
within Scripps due to the robust electronic medical record
along with the email system. So, it’s very common for me
to be contacting and talking, either on the phone or through email,
to physicians that are also a part of
the care team of the patient. Patients should choose Scripps
for vascular surgery because there is a robust
support network within Scripps, specifically for that
disease process. We have a very strong
cardiovascular department within Scripps and the support network within it,
including the nurses and the OR support, is geared toward the patient
with vascular disease.
