West-Central Report: Spinal Endoscopy at the Jewish General Hospital. A Quebec First.

Back pain and loss of function in my
right leg we did a MRI and we discovered that it
was a herniated disc The Jewish General Hospital a member facility of CIUSSS west
central Montreal continues to innovate in the field of surgery. This time is dr.
Jeff Golan neurosurgeon who treats some of his patients with a procedure called
spinal endoscopy this is a first in Quebec. I’m very excited I’m thrilled
because this is a technology that I feel has been lacking in the Canadian market. It kind of impacted on how I was able to work and even at home sleeping at night
I’d have to wake up in the middle of the night to take pain medication. spinal
endoscopy is a way of accessing the spine through a very small access tube
it’s almost like a metal straw that we introduced through the skin directly to
the area of interest in the spine. For sciatica for some types of back pain for
spinal stenosis with this surgery there’s almost no tissue damage and so
recovery and return to normal activity can be as quick as several days. Today
I’m actually feeling really good I’ve been at work today so I was in the area
going around seeing clinics I am bending over and doing stuff I’m not lifting
stuff yet I’m on a 10 pound weight restriction but at the same point I’m
still able to actually go and do what I need to do. Life is good. Dr. Golan
believes that in time he could treat between 100 and 150 patients a year For
West Central report I’m Barry Morgan.
